Avon
Carrie Firestone organized the first Farmington Valley Environmental
Festival which was held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Thompson Brook
School in Avon.
Mary-beth Hart helped establish a recycling program at Roaring Brook
School (RBS) in Avon. Mary-beth also serves on the "Green Team" with
the mission of finding other ways to "Green Up" the school.
Branford
Lauren Brown is responsible for the construction of the Pond Lily
Fishway to restore anadromous fish passage to upstream spawning areas
in the West River watershed; and made improvements to public access and
educational opportunities at the Long Wharf Preserve adjacent to New
Haven Harbor.
Bristol
ESPN, Inc., has converted all of their styrofoam food packaging and
cups to compostable options - the ecotainer (made with PLA) and others
(manufactured from bagasse) and they are now composting 100% of their
food waste generated in the cafeteria and on their campus.
Brookfield
Efficient Lighting and Maintenance, Inc. (ELM) provides energy-saving
products and technologies to Connecticut's businesses by retrofitting
existing lighting.
Cheshire
Atlantic Inertial Sytems (AIS), Inc., sponsored a Household Hazardous
Waste/Universal Waste Collection Earth Day Event.
Chester
Chrisholm Marina has signed on to the Small Business Energy Advantage
Program, which has saved them up to 17% on their electric bills.
Danbury
Branson Ultrasonics, Corp., implemented a summertime air conditioning
on/off temperature management plan for twenty-one office and
manufacturing operations locations within the facility.
Cartus has over 1600 employees commuting to the office daily and
realized the need to chamption a carpooling/ride sharing program. Over
the last three years Cartus has become a huge proponent of NU-RIDES.
There are currently over 400 NU-RIDE members at the Danbury site with
over 200 utilizing this program.
The Candlewood Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited undertook a major
restoration project of Deep Brook, a distressed Class 1 trout stream in
Newtown.
Christopher William Fedge
is a boy scout with Troop 52 in Danbury, CT and has completed his Eagle
Project. For his project, he worked on a hiking trail located at
Tarrywile Park in Danbury, CT. Over 3 days he, with a group of scouts
from his troup, removed 1.5 tons of heavy debris, including a car, a
pickup truck, washing machines, dryers and a stove which were deposited
beside the trail near and at the top of the mountain near the airport
beacon.
Spirol International Corporation's Environmental Management
System was certified to ISO 14001. The most significant successes of
Spirol's Environmental Management System were a 22.67% decrease in
Waste Oil disposal resulting from 100% recycling of metal cutting
lubricants. In addition, Spirol reduced electricity consumption by
7.78% with the installation of a High Efficient Lighting System
equipped with motion detectors in office areas.
Durham
ECO and Boy Scout Troop 27 successfully set up a bottle recycling
program at the Durham Fair in September of 2006. They successfully
removed around 20,000 beverage containers from the waste stream.
East Windsor
Next Level Recycling (NLR) successfully implemented a recycling program
at Fairfield University for their students to recycle batteries and
small electronics at 3 locations on their campus.
Enfield
Senior Aerospace Sterling Machine, Co. recently completed their final
stage for the 14001 program. The company reduced their chemical
inventory and replace any hazardous chemicals with safer and non-toxic
materials. The company implemented a mandatory recycling program with
amazing results including e-waste.
Farmington
The J.F. Fredericks Tool Co., achieving ISO 14001 certification, the
company demonstrates its continued commitment to quality, service and
to our environment. This certification supplements their previously
awarded ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100:2004 Quality Systems.
Madison
The Madison Land Conservation Trust, have added 16.6 acres to their
Ironwoods Preserve which now contains a total of 102 acres. A trail
complex has been developed, blazed and maintained in this preserve.
Middletown
Stericycle continues to reduce the amount of mercury going into the
Biomedical Waste Stream. This has been accomplished through their
Amalgam Mail Back program.
Milford
Schick Manufacturing, Inc. has modified a major manufacturing process
to eliminate the use of a solvent containing material. The former
process used in excess of 4,000 gallons of solvent per year. In
addition, the required roof-top incinerator (thermal after-burner) used
as control equipment to treat this material will no longer be
necessary. This incinerator used over 8,000,000 cubic of natural gas
per year.
New Milford
The Rotary Club of New Milford held its first annual Community Paper
Shredding Day. The event provided consumers and businesses the
opportunity to spring clean their home and office where they can have
their confidential documents shredded by a mobile paper shredding truck.
Last summer the Eliot Pratt Education Center organized and implemented
a major restoration project addressing both instream and riparian
environmental issues.
Newtown
Charter Communications implemented a videotape recycling program during
April 07 to coincide with Earth Day. They collected 7000 tapes, or 2
tons of material which will be recycled. The campaign will be conducted
yearly.
Old Saybrook
Saybrook Point Inn & Spa was awarded an Energy Star by E.P.A. on
June 14, 2007, for superior energy performance. Saybrook Point Inn
& Spa has partnered with Connecticut Audobon Society to place bird
sanctuaries on their property.
Salem
Salem Land Trust (SLT) has purchased and will maintain 101 acres of
critical unspoiled woodland in Salem, CT. The Litsky parcel, now known
as The Darling Road Preserve, provides an essential land bridge for
wildlife at the heart of an 8,000-acre forest.
Shelton
Oil Purification Systems, Inc., (OPS), is the developer of the OPS-1, a
patented on-board oil refining system that continuously removes the
solid and liquid contaminants from engine oil, allowing the engine to
run with clean oil 100% of the time.
Simsbury
Jill Paterson produced, filmed, edited, narrated, and starred in four
(4) TV shows, called the Green Bean Magazine, that were aired on the
public access TV station in Simsbury. These shows provided useful
educational information on how to conserve energy, to prevent air
pollution, to reduce your carbon footprint, to reduce groundwater and
soil pollution, to recycle and compost.
Stratford
EMSAR operated an employee EWASTE (electronics waste) collection site.
Cell phones were segregated and sent to RECellular in Michigan where
they refurbish, reuse, and responsibly recycle discarded cell phones.
Torrington
Fifteen (15) EMSAR Torrington employees, friends, and family
volunteered to pick up trash from the Stillwater Pond boat launch area
on August 11, 2007. This was a cooperative venture between EMSAR and
the maintenance department of Burr Pond State Park.
O & G Industries, Inc. In coordination with the Friends of Lover's
Leap State Park Chairperson, Jeanne Garvey, and O&G Industries,
Inc., supplied approximately 1,400 tons of base stone and 100 tons of
asphalt for use in the construction of the 40-car parking facility and
driveway. The company's donation was instrumental in improving access
to the park's many unique features including Falls Bridge, an iron
bridge built in 1895, which has been part of the National Register of
Historic places since 1976.
Watertown
Philson, Inc., in 2007, sold their 1995 gas powered truck and signed a
rental agreement with Ryder for a new 2007 ultra low sulfur diesel fuel
truck. This truck has a rating of 10-14 mpg, while the old truck was
rated at 5-7 mpg. The new truck meets the 2007 vehicle emissions
standards challenge requiring the reduction of nitrogen oxides and
hydrocarbons by 50% and particulate matter by 90%. Philson Incorporated
conducted a 6th Annual Steelebrook River Clean-up on Saturday, April
21, 2007.
Westport
Alicia Mozian of Westport Conservation Department is an avid volunteer.
Her efforts include identifying pollution sources, areas of runoff,
monitoring water quality by sampling, securing grants for non-profit
monitoring groups such as Earthplace (Harbor Watch/River Watch) and
acquiring more open space. The efforts that Alicia has devoted to water
quality monitoring allows the pinpointing of pollution sources that may
be remediated improving water quality and allowing shellfishing areas
to remain open and utilized by both the community recreational
shellfishers and the commercial shellfishermen.
West Simsbury
Flamig Farm is owned and operated by Nevin and Julie Christensen in
West Simsbury, Connecticut. The Christensens have turned their 45-acre
farm into an outdoor classroom for students and individuals interested
in the environment and the protection of natural resources. They
annually donate $1 from every yard of mulch sold during the month of
April to the Simsbury Land Trust. Julie Christensen runs a Summer Farm
Adventure Camp and offers School Farm Tours throughout the school year
in an effort to expose children to the diverse natural environment that
exists on Flamig Farm and to educate children and their parents in ways
to live more harmoniously with the environment.
Wethersfield
Aegis, Inc., built an addition which enable them to do the following :
reused ~ 65% lumber and doors and windows; installed low E high
efficiency windows and doors, installed energy star rated appliances
and purchased 100 percent of electricity from renewable resources.
Winsted
The Highland Lake Watershed Association sponsors biannual cleanup days
(Spring and Fall). The cleanup days result in a significant amount of
trash and assorted garbage being removed from around the lake. Members
of the Association collect water samples and conduct Secchi disk
testing three times each year.
